The Philomel Singers are a female voice choir which was founded in 1989 by Madge Norris and conducted by her until December 2008. The present director, Michael Johnson, has been working with the choir since January 2009. The choir sings a wide range of music, both accompanied and unaccompanied, and gives at least three concerts a year to raise funds for local, national and international charities. Over the past 30 years The Philomel Singers have raised over £35,000. Charities supported include Julia’s House, The Royal British Legion, Children’s Hospice South West, Dorothy House, Help for Heroes, Wiltshire Air Ambulance, RNLI, Save the Children and Alzheimers Support. The choir enjoys entering music festivals and has been very successful winning several classes notably at prestigious venues such as the Oxford Music Festival. The Philomel Singers rehearse each Monday evening at St James’ Hall in Trowbridge.
